"Poem About Oguta Ameshi by Oriuwa Ossai"
A beauty reclines by waters of sapphire beneath skies of azure She calls out a moody tune filled with melancholic nostalgia She whispers encouragingly to Ogbuide as she tends to Orashi her love scowling menacingly at Osimiri as she inches near
She fills Amorocha with siver bellies to quell the famished groans of Idu and Nwapa Rivers of black gold from her flow unending Like a she-goat in her season she is fertile Yielding Iji'n'ofigbo for Akuanyanugbo and Ochije Mother of priests and theives Parent of queens and prostitutes Her offspring abound A singer here, there a doctor Lawyers and builders, pagans and pranksters Yet with equal love she beholds them She extols her sons in song and of her daughters she speaks of their virtue with pride To the beat of the Uko, she calls out her erring children The belle of the counties she is Like a mother hen she sent Uhamiri to repel our enemies as they thronged to desecrete the land so long ago Today, tales of her immense wealth and wisdom still echo through the lands Do you not hear her call in her lonliness and despair? Her voice hoarse from silent yells Her back breaking 'neath the weight she daily bears She calls out to umu Ugwuta Ameshi Obodo Ukwu n'eri Eze My children die daily, she wails, for no one tends to their ills my young men have deserted me for younger beauties She asks to be remembered She pleads to be loved again Return she begs, to your first love Maka n'Ameshi amaka.
